Engineering Bricks Explained: Strength & Uses

Engineering Bricks

Engineering bricks often come up in construction conversations but what are they?

Quite simply they are colorful bricks that work well in certain structural, underground and damp situations. Their benefits are that they are very strong with a high compressive strength and so can support great weights and dense with low absorption rates so that they do not suck in moisture. As they are relatively dry, they do not transfer as much dampness as other bricks.

They are used in foundations below the damp proof course (DPC), in manholes and retaining walls. They are more expensive than common bricks and are therefore best used where strength and low water absorption is important. They are manufactured in classes A & B. Class A have a higher compression strength of 125N/mm2 with a water absorption rate of less than 4.5%. Class B have a lesser compression value of 75N/mm2 and an absorption rate of less than 7%.

They are also selected as a coping course for walls for both their appearance and low water absorption rate. There are vague classifications of ‘semi engineering’ bricks which are bricks that have a higher compressive strength than others but do not qualify as engineering bricks. It is best to confirm what compressive strength is required by your consultant engineer and check that the brick meets this standard.

Designers like to use them where the structure is emphasized and on display by showcasing brick columns features in their red, white or blue finishes. They often support large structural steel beams to great effect.
